While visiting the Boston Reefers Society in early 2004, probably the
best reef club in the country, Steve Tyree found and eventually acquired
an exotic plating Montipora coral that was being maintained in one of the
Boston Reefers home aquaria. The aquarist was Rebecca Rollins and she
had an incredible collection of exotic stony corals. This particular Montipora
palawanensis had some very prominent large verrucae on its surface. These
verrucae fuse into continuous ridges or formed irregular patterns. A large
plate of this coral with its large ridged tuberculae can make for an exotic
looking coral. This is a slow to moderate growing coral that forms thick plates.
The surface of the plate is an intense green coloration with green polyps.
Sometimes the polyps can become blue colored. Steve Tyree is maintaining
this coral for reeffarmers.com in a 125 gallon naturally filtered TriZonal
system. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positoned 15 inches below and
behind a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium Metal Halide. We believe this exotic
Montipora is a moderate to strong light coral. Water current requirements
are moderate. Price is currently $50 per small sized fragment. The bimonthly
