The YR Riley Hybrid Watermelon has some very unique and unusual qualities. The surface of the coral is very rough with numerous protrusions. Corallites are large and knobby. In the valleys between corallites, the surface is a turquoise blue. Near corallite mouths the coral develops burgundy pink pigments. Corallite eyes have the typical Watermelon pigment colors. A bright green inner corallite area also contains yellow to red pigments around the mouth.

This coral is a Your Reef (YR) original and was found on a tranship from Indonesia in late 2009. The coral originally only had moderate pigment intensity, but its pigmentation intensified over 6 months in captivity. The Hybrid name that John created helps to describe the very unusual qualities and pigments of the surface structure of the coral. The coral was also named after John's daughter Riley. John recommends moderate light and moderate to strong water flow.

Steve Tyree is maintaining a seed section of this coral for Reeffarmers.com in a 130 gallon Raceway Gyre BiZonal system. This system is naturally filtered with a semi-cryptic zone and a reef flat exposed zone. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positioned to receive moderate light levels from a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium metal halide. The price of this coral per small fragment consisting of a single corallite will be determined by the First Edition Silent Auction.

Please note Reeffarmers is no longer taking new reservations for new corals. The current economic conditions are not supportive for reservations that extend for a few years into the future. After this first edition is distributed, we will sell future captive produced fragments on either our Buy It Now page or via another silent auction. We will still list exotic corals as Limited Editions and will continue to build web pages for them.

Limited Edition YR Riley Hybrid Watermelon Corallite Closeup. Your Reef Colony Image.
The unique surface and pigment qualities of this coral can be seen in this closeup image.
Fragments that have been grown in captivity tend to develop smaller protrusions then this
original colony had developed in the wild. Larger protrusions probably develop in stronger
water flows. The unique turquoise blue and burguindy pink pigments are also shown.
