The Volcanic Eruption Acan has large sized corallites and is probably an Acanthastrea rotundoflora. It has an amazing pigmentation pattern that can vary its intensity. The fluorescent green large corallites have extensive bright orange ridges. Radiating outward from these ridges are lines of orange red spots. The inside of the corallites also contain concentric circles of orange yellow spots.

The coral was purchased from the reef shop Amazing Reef's in Southern California. Ali of Amazing Reefs sold the entire colony to Jimmy Tran (jimmy007) in early 2010. Jimmy showed this coral to Reeffarmers in late 2010/early 2011. We immediately recognized its very unique pigmentation pattern. Jimmy and Reeffarmers both developed the coral marketing name of Volcanic Eruption. We currently believe that the coral prefers weak to moderate light levels and moderate current. Just which conditions help to develop the most intense pigmentation pattern is still being determined.

Steve Tyree is maintaining a seed section of this coral for Reeffarmers.com in a 130 gallon Raceway Gyre BiZonal system. This system is naturally filtered with a semi-cryptic zone and a reef flat exposed zone. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positioned to receive weak to moderate light levels from a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium metal halide. Water current is also weak to moderate. The price of this coral per single large corallite will be determined in part by the first edition auction conducted live at the 2011 www.sw-cfm.com coral show.
