Superman Chalice
Echinophyllia sp.

Limited Edition Superman Chalice Reeffarmers Seed Section. In this image the Superman Chalice seed
is expanded and puffed out. The bright red/orange corallites and yellow striped surface protrusions
contrasts well with the corals blue colored base pigmentation. This pigmentation can appear more turquoise.
Note the green pigment area in the lower left section of the coral. This green pigment was located along
the leading growth edge of the original imported colony.

The Superman Chalice coral is an incredibly pigmented Echinophyllia. The corallite eyes of the coral are colored bright red/orange. The main body of the coral is blue that can appear more turquoise blue under certain lights. When the coral was first imported is also had a leading edge that was pigmented green. Now the coral only has green in certain spots. The surface of the coral has large protrusions or bumps that also tend to form around the corallites. These bumps have yellow pigments that form stripes up and over the protrusions. Reeffarmers acquired our seed of this coral from Jose Casas. The original colony came from Victor at World Wide Corals. We currently believe that the coral develops its best pigmentation under low light levels. Obviously the coral looks best when its base pigmentation is more intense blue. It can tend to develop a more turquoise blue base pigmentation. Regardless, the bright red/orange corallites combined with the yellow striped protrusions make this one of the more rare and sought after chalices. It would also be interesting to see if the leading green growth edge can be developed within captivity. Steve Tyree is maintaining a seed section of this coral for Reeffarmers.com in an 125 gallon naturally filtered TriZonal system. This system is naturally filtered with a semi-cryptic zone, a semi-exposed zone and a reef flat exposed zone. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positioned to receive weak to moderate light levels from a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium metal halide. The coral appears to develop its best combination of colors when exposed to weak light levels. Price per small fragment is $245.00 and was partially determined based on the first edition auction which is linked below.

Limited Edition Superman Chalice World Wide Corals Seed Section.
In this image the coral tissue is partially retracted. This makes the surface protrusions
more visible. They are also more pointed when the tissue is retracted. Also note
the rich texture of the corals surface structure and pigment distribution.
