Another incredible Aussie colony from OA that is best described as a Red Shortcake Acro.
This is the only colony at OA from which all Hot Lava fragments are farmed and harvested.
Polyps are bright red, corallites are red and branch stems are cream colored.
Each polyp also extends an elongated single cream colored tentacle.

The OA Hot Lava Acropora is a bright red Acropora somewhat similar to the shortcake-like Acro. Brian Kim at Oculus noticed this colony within a shipment of Strawberry Shortcake Aussies. Normally the Strawberry Aussie has pink corallites and green branch stems. This new Hot Lava morph has cream colored branch stems and bright red corallites along with red polyps. This helps to give the colony a more overall red appearance. It is very possible that this could be an entirely different species of Acropora.

Reeffarmers acquired our seed fragment and the first edition fragment directly from the importer and wholesaler Oculus Aquatics (OA) located in Van Nuys California. This colony was exported from Australia along with the exotic Strawberry Shortcake Acropora. The strawberry shortcake should have also been made an LE coral when it first arrived into the captive coral market. It is another very stunning Acropora that does well within captivity. There have now been quite a few Strawberry Shortcakes imported over the past few years. This new OA Hot Lava appears to be a much more rare Aussie coral.

Steve Tyree is maintaining a seed section of this Aussie coral for Reeffarmers.com in a 130 gallon Raceway Gyre BiZonal system. This system is naturally filtered with a semi-cryptic zone and a reef flat exposed zone. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positioned to receive strong to moderate light levels from a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium metal halide. The first edition fragment of this coral was sold on our Buy It Now page. Introductory list price was $100 for a small single branch fragment.
