The OA BK Inferno Cyphastrea is one of those crazy corals that almost looks too exotic to even be a coral. More like a crazy painting or something. What a pigmentation pattern. Each corallite mouth is ringed with bright red that is developed by the bright red partially extended polyps. Each mouth also has one bright gold spot that is perhaps found on one of the polyp tentacles. The red ring is surrounded by golden colored flower petals that develop a wheel sprocketed pattern. To say that this is a striking pigment pattern is an understatement. The main surface can be better seen in the closeup image below. There are striations or line patterns that could develop in greater intensity. Even more possibilities with this amazing coral.

This coral was located and culled from hundreds of imports by Brian Kim at Oculus Aquatics (OA). Thanks for finding and saving this rare gem Brian ! OA is an importer wholesaler and their products are available through your local store or online retailer. There was only one parent seed colony of this coral at OA when this web page was constructed in late February 2012. All propagated fragments from OA will be produced from that initial seed colony imaged above.

Steve Tyree is maintaining a seed section of this coral for Reeffarmers.com in a 130 gallon Raceway Gyre BiZonal system. This system is naturally filtered with a semi-cryptic zone and a reef flat exposed zone. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positioned to receive moderate to weak light levels from a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium metal halide. The first edition fragment of this coral was sold at the 2012 DA-CFM coral show to a professional grower.

Limited Edition OA BK Inferno Cyphastrea Reeffarmers Fragment Polyps Closed Image.
These partially closed polyps show that the red ring is developed by bright red tentacles.
The lines or striations on the surface between corallites are also visible.
The gold petals appear to be orientated with these lines or striations.

Limited Edition OA BK Inferno Cyphastrea Reeffarmers Fragment Closeup Image.
There has been some controversy concerning this corals species identification.
The closeup image above should help with species identification.
Oculus Aquatics believes it is a Cyphastrea. Others believe it is a Plesiastrea.
Reeffarmers has been busy relocating, but we finally looked into the issue.
It could be a Plesiastrea, but as Veron noted, Plesiastrea is a poorly defined genus.
We will keep the original OA marketing name until proper identification is peformed.
