This exotic baby blue A. tenuis was imported from Australia to Oculus Aquatics (OA) located in Van Nuys California. Oculus is an importer/wholesaler that specializes in exotic coral species. Reeffarmers made our first visit to their facility under the recommendation from Seth of Coral Fever in New Orleans. Back in the early to late 1990's, Steve of Reeffarmers made frequent visits to coral importer/wholesalers in the Los Angeles area, but that trickled down to just a few in the early 2000's. Then Steve made the full commitment to promote captive grown coral and made almost no visits from the mid-2000's until early 2012.
When we visited Oculus Aquatics, we were surprised at the shear volume of fragments that Oculus has in stock. Brian Kim, their warehouse lead, has been developing their Aquaculture program and he has literally produced fields of coral fragments. Brian also has developed a keen eye for exotic coral specimens. The main display reefs at OA are used to grow and farm fragments from specially selected exotic species. They are also selecting very unique corals and allowing them to fully adapt to captivity before releasing any new fragments. OA is certainly not like the coral importers and wholesalers that Steve frequently visited during the 1990's.
Steve Tyree is maintaining a seed section of this Aussie coral for Reeffarmers.com in a 130 gallon Raceway Gyre BiZonal system. This system is naturally filtered with a semi-cryptic zone and a reef flat exposed zone. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positioned to receive strong to moderate light levels from a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium metal halide. The first edition fragment of this coral was sold on our Buy It Now page. Introductory list price was $85 for a small single branch fragment.
