Joe's Solar Flare Favia Limited Edition. Joe Knows Reefs Original Colony Closeup Image.
This coral is obviously named for its large and brilliant golden yellow corallite centers.
In Joe's colony a finely structered pink ring developed around the corallites.
The golden yellow center areas were also confined to within the corallite center.

The Joe's Solar Flare Favia is an easy to maintain Favia that developed some very colorful pigments under weak to moderate lighting. What is unique about its pigments is the large and extensive golden yellow areas that develop. These areas form irregular patches that spread out from corallite centers. There are also turquoise, pink and bluish pigments. The golden yellow corallites can also contain pink red specks and the corallite itself can be surrounded by a pink ringed outer edge. Corallite ridges tend to contain the bluish pigments.

This original Favia colony was exported from Bali Indonesia in 2009. It was distributed through a West Coast US wholesaler who sold the coral to an east coast retail shop. Joey Nichols of Joe Knows Reefs acquired the imported colony from the LFS (local fish store) located in Sumter South Carolina. At that time the coral was primarily brown, had lost its color and was in poor health. Joey placed the colony within a well run and established reef coral system. After some time recuperating the coral regained its health and developed its exotic pigmentation. Joey kept a fragment of the original Favia and eventually grew out 3 separate colorful seed colonies. A large healthy and colorful section of the coral was returned to the LFS. This coral appears to require weak to moderate light levels and moderate to weak water currents.

Steve Tyree is maintaining a seed section of this coral for Reeffarmers.com in a 130 gallon Raceway Gyre BiZonal system. This system is naturally filtered with a semi-cryptic zone and a reef flat exposed zone. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positioned to receive weak to moderate light levels from a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium metal halide. Water current is moderate to weak. The first edition fragment was sold on the Buy It Now page.
