Reeffarmers.com acquired a fragment of this 'Purple Monster' like coral
from Eddie Hanson of Tropical Paradise. Eddie acquired the coral from Bali in
January 2004. He belives the species is Acropora lokani. Reeffarmers thinks
that the Purple Monsters from Bali are very close to the original Purple
Monster that was exported from the Solomon Islands. There are however some
differences. This Bali Purple Monster has branches that can slightly taper
at the tips and branches tend to be thinner. The Solomons Purple Monster does
not have tapering branch ends and branches tend to be thicker. The branch ends on
the Solomons purple monster are more rounded. The Solomons PM also develops a
more bluer purple while the Bali PM develops a more redder purple coloration.
We believe Eddies Purple Monster represents the Bali version of the Purple
Monster Type of stony corals. There is also a Fiji Purple Monster Type and even
a Tonga Purple Monster Type. The Fiji is more Loripes-like with thinner branches
while the Tonga has more thicker branches and is more austera-like.
Steve Tyree is maintaining this coral for reeffarmers.com in a 125 gallon
naturally filtered TriZonal system. In Steve's captive reef the coral is
positoned 17 inches below a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium Metal Halide.
This coral is now coloring up very well and has begun to grow. Reeffarmers
suspects that this coral is sensitive to the Red Acro bugs. We eliminated
these bugs from the system with the interceptor drug in June of 2004. You
can examine the closeup picture of this colony to verify the elimination
of the red acro bugs in this system. Water current is moderate. Price is
currently $80 per small sized fragment. The bimonthly limited edition
reservation schedules can be found below.
CORAL RETIRED February 2005. Reeffarmers.com decided to retire
the Limited Edition coral Acropora sp. Eddies Purple Monster during February of
2005. This was done because of a calamity of errors that may have resulted in the
loss of all living sections of this LE coral. There is only perhaps two fragments
out there that may have survived. Even the original colony possessed by Eddie of
Tropical Paradise is no longer available. It may have been stolen from his retail
reef shop. The large fragment that reeffarmers.com was harvesting from was basically
over harvested and the remaining tiny frag was lost. Of the three fragments we
distributed only two may be still surviving. If we discover that a living fragment
of this coral remains, we will attempt to acquire a fragment and may even reinstate
this as an active LE coral. If anyone who recieved a Limited Edition fragment of
this coral and still has the fragment living, please send us your email or web site
link. We will add your email or web link to the Limited Edition History listed below
and may contact you to acquire a fragment of this coral.
