Bali Tricolor Colony - Note solid Purple Pigments

This unidentified Acropora species has an incredible coloration intensity. It is called the 'Bali Tricolor'. The term tricolor was coined by SDC and generally refers to an Acropora that has bright green polyps (color 1), purple tips or purple branches (color 2) and a brown base and or brown lower branch area. There have been quite a few tricolor species imported from Fiji over the past few years. These generally are thicker branched Acropora that have tended to be very difficult to maintain coloration in captivity. We have generally refered to those species as secale or valida. During the mid to late 1990's, we saw some very exotic tricolored thin branched Acropora species imported from the Solomons that were generally referred to as true Acropora nana. They tended to develop purple coloration over most of their surface area. Those 'True' Acropora nana tricolor corals maintained their pigmentation quite well in captivity. The Bali tricolor we are selling fragments of is very similar to the old Solomons True Acropora nana tricolors. The Solomon Islands has not shipped Acropora colonies for quite awhile. This Bali tricolor can actually develop an intense purple coloration over its entire body surface. Perhaps it should be called a bicolor (purple with green polyps). The coral needs moderate to intense light to develop the purple over its entire surface. Purple branches can be maintained in weak to moderate lighting. This coral was originally imported within a 1999 tranship for the retail reef shop 'Piece of the Reef'. Bill Schroer sold the entire colony to Tracy Gray. This was one of the few whole colonies that Tracy placed within his incredible stony reef. Most corals in his reef were started with fragments. Tracy coined the name 'Bali Tricolor' to identify this coral. He had a magnificent colony that was unfortunately lost when his main reef had problems while he was on a business trip to Japan. Luckily a couple of months before the accident reeffarmers.com was able to acquire a large fragment of the coral from Tracy. We have since given a captive grown fragment of this coral back to Tracy. We wanted to list the Bali Tricolor as a Limited Edition earlier in the year 2003, but just about every local visitor has wanted a fragment of this intensely colored coral. We begin listing the coral in October of 2003 and the first three months we will produce 2 fragments of the coral which have been reserved months ahead by local reefers. During 2004 and beyond we plan on harvesting one fragment per month. Steve Tyree is maintaining this coral for reeffarmers.com in one of his 125 gallon naturally filtered Tri-Zonal EG Reef Aquariums. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positoned at about 14 inches from a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium Metal Halide. This reef also has two T5 actinic fluorescent lights. Water current is moderate. Price is currently $65 per small sized fragment. The monthly limited edition reservation schedules can be found below. Please note effective September 2011 we have changed the harvesting and reservation schedule to bimonthly. This better matches the corals long term growth rate in captivity.
