During the later part of 2004 we occasionally saw some very interesting massive coral colonies that had brilliant purplish blue coloration. Typically only a couple were exported from Fiji every month. Steve Tyree found this particular specimen at Pacific Aqua Farms within Los Angeles California. The main body of this Astreopora species has a deep purple blue coloration that can even turn pink under intense light levels. We were told by PAF that these corals are collected from deeper Fijian waters. We are assuming that the coral requires stronger currents due to its massive structure. Light levels appear to vary as does the coloration that the coral eventually develops. The polyps of the coral extend during the night and may even eventually extend during the day in our butterfly fish free captive systems. Polyps also appear to have blue pigments different from the main body pigmentation. Recently this coral has developed a very striking green growth edge pigmentation. Steve Tyree is maintaining this coral for reeffarmers.com in a 125 gallon naturally filtered TriZonal system. This system is naturally filtered with a cryptic zone, filter feeder zone and reef flat exposed zone. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positoned 11 inches away from a 400 watt 20,000 K radium metal halide. The blue/purple coloration appears to require moderate light levels. To develop more pinkish color expose the coral to strong to intense light levels. Water current is moderate to strong. Price is currently $75 per small sized fragment. The monthly limited edition reservation schedules can be found below. Please note effective September 2008 we have changed the harvesting and reservation schedule to quarterly. This better matches the corals long term growth rate in captivity. Update September 2008, now that the coral has been growing in captive systems for 4 years, it has developed an even more spectacular pigmentation. Polyps are bright fluorescent green. The main body is purple pink and the leading edges of the coral is also bright green. It is however still a slow growing coral. See image below.
