Acanthastrea echinata Purple Bullseye

This Acanthastrea echinata was imported from Tonga in early 2004. Bill
Schroer had done some collecting in Tongan waters for Jeff's Exotic Fish
and he managed to find some very exotic stony corals. This A. echinata
has an incredible bullseye coloration pattern within its corallites. The very
center of the corallite is colored light purple/blue which is surrounded by a
darker purple. The corallite walls are bright orange. Inbetween the bullseye
colored corallites there is an overall brown coloration. On this surface there
are small bumps that are developing a bright green coloration. In some
areas of the colony there is a blue pigment developing on top of the brown
tissue located inbetween the corallites. This coral has some incredible
pigmentation potential. An all blue colored Acanthastrea echinata with
orange and purple bullseye corallites would be an incredibly colored stony
coral. Steve Tyree is maintaining this coral for reeffarmers.com in a 360 gallon
mixed system containing a protein skimmer, cryptic sponge chambers,
along with a micron bag/carbon chamber. In Steve's captive reef the
coral is positoned 21 inches below a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium Metal Halide.
The purple coloration within the center of the corallites has been maintaining
its intensity in captivity. The small green bumps on the surface of the coral
are becomming more intense. The orange rings within the corallite wall have
been maintaining their intensity. Water current is moderate. Price is currently
$90 per small sized fragment. The monthly limited edition reservation
schedules can be found below. Please note effective February 2008 we
have changed the harvesting and reservation schedule to bimonthly. This better
matches the corals long term growth rate in captivity.
