Delirium Favia
A Rocky Mountain Frags Original

Exclusive Edition Delirium Favia Image.
Now is that a crazy pigmentation for a Favia coral or what ?
The main surface of the favia is dark red to bright fluorescent red/pink.
On top of that red base there are electric green/gold lines and patches.
Electric pigment patterns tend to occur on the tops of radiating corallite ridges.

When Reeffarmers first saw images of this coral, we originally thought it was some exotic pigmented chalice. But when we were told it was a Favia, we were shocked. First time we have seen a Favia with crazy electric lines of pigmentation. The main surface of the coral is dark red with areas where a fluorescent red/pink can develop. The red actually fluoresces very strongly under black light (UV) and fluoresces weakly under actinic (violet) light. The electric lines and patches of pigments are composed of a mix of green and golden pigments. Under some lights (UV, Actinic, 20,000 K) the lines appear more fluorescent green, while under other lights the pigments actually appear golden.

Reeffarmers acquired our seed corallite and first edition corallite of the Delirium Favia from Rocky Mountain Frags. They had just acquired the coral colony from an importer in late January 2012. They recommend weak to moderate light and moderate water current. The name for this Favia was coined by Jared Butler of Rocky Mountain Frags. Delirium is sudden severe confusion and rapid changes in a humans brain function that can occur with mental or physical illness. It also describes how coral enthusiasts feel when they are told this crazy and mind blowing coral is actually a Favia.

Steve Tyree is maintaining a seed section of this coral for Reeffarmers.com in a 80 gallon Raceway Gyre BiZonal system. This system is naturally filtered with a semi-cryptic zone and a reef flat exposed zone. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positioned to receive weak to very weak light levels from a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium metal halide. The first edition fragment of this coral was auctioned live during the 2012 DA-CFM Coral Show on March 3rd during the 2012 Next Wave symposium.

Please note - Reeffarmers has discovered that this is a very low light coral. It will contract and lose its brilliant red pigmentation when kept under moderate to strong light levels. It prefers weak to very low light levels. It has now expanded and regained its red pigmentation under very low lighting.
