Eric at Fragfarmer.com has found another exciting new transhipped coral. This Porites coral has a very unique appearence that helps to define it as distinct from a plating encrusting Montipora coral. Polyps have an unusual shape because they extend their white mouths, but they do not extend their tentacles. The surface of the coral was originally colored purple/blue, but the Reeffarmers seed fragment has developed a primarily bright blue coloration under a 20,000 K radium metal halide. The white polyp mouths contrast strongly with this base blue coloration. Corallites are generally slightly depressed and ridges can be seen inbetween the corallites. Reeffarmers believes this is a Porites horizontalata because the corallites are about 1 mm across. These are larger corallites then the corallites that occur within the Porites rus. What makes this an even more exciting coral is that according to Verons Corals of the World this coral also forms contorted branches. Steve Tyree is maintaining a seed section of the Space Invader Porites Coral for Reeffarmers.com in one of his 125 gallon naturally filtered Tri-Zonal Reef Aquarium. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positioned to receive moderate light under a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium Metal Halide. The Auctioned Edition opening bid for each new auction is currently $90 per small sized fragment. The quarterly auctioned edition auction schedules can be found below. The First Edition Auctioned fragment will consist of one half of the Reeffarmers seed section imaged above. Please Note - On May 2008 we retired this auction edition. This was due to the loss of the seed coral. This coral unfortunately did not exhibit sustained long term captive growth.

Space Invader Potires horizontalata Fragfarmers Original Colony. The original colony was
mostly purple blue in color. Although the exporter called the coral a Montipora, it clearly
has similarities to the Porites rus. Corallites are about 1 mm in diameter and this means
the coral is a Porites horizontalata and not the Porites rus.

Space Invader Porites horizontalata Reeffarmers Colony Polyp Mouth Closeup.
Note on the upper polyps the side view shows how these polyps primarily extend
their white mouths during the day. The unusual appearence of corallites can be
seen in the lower corallite closeups which are viewed from the top.
