Montipora sp.

This submassive and irregularly branching Montipora was a new species morph for the captive market when it was imported. The coral also has an intense Orange Cream Reddish pigmentation that contains some mauve coloration. The surface structure is very smooth and polyps are very tiny and they contain more reddish pigments. Because this is a submassive coral, at times it can appear as a brilliant solid orange red Montipora confusa type of coral. The original colony of this coral also could develop lime green pigments in certain areas. What even makes this coral more unique is that it can also form irregular branches.

The original colony was imported from Kupang Indonesia in May 2006 and was acquired by the old Fragfarmers company. Eric called this coral a Montipora setosa and that is also the name the coral will be marketed under by Reeffarmers. This M. setosa labelled coral however could also be a M. niugini species. It is very difficult to determine which is a more accurate id at this point in time. The M. niugini species has: a Smooth surface; forms small irregular branches; also forms a submassive structure; its polyps are very small; and corallites are immersed and indistinct; Veron also reports this coral as occurring in a mauve color. The M. setosa species has: papillae around corallites; polyps are large and distinct; a reported color by Veron of brown; but it can also form verrucae with its branches. These verrucae can be seen in the parent colony image above. Reeffarmers acquired our fragment of this coral in a trade with snipersps who had acquired his seed fragment from Fragfarmers.com .

Steve Tyree is maintaining a seed farming section of the Montipora setosa coral for Reeffarmers.com in one of his 125 gallon naturally filtered Tri-Zonal Reef Aquarium. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positioned to receive moderate light under a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium Metal Halide. The price of this coral is currently $45 per fragment.

Please note Reeffarmers is no longer taking new reservations for new corals. The current economic conditions are not supportive for reservations that extend for a few years into the future. After this first edition is distributed, we will sell future captive produced fragments on either our Buy It Now page or via another silent auction. We will still list exotic corals as Limited Editions and will continue to build web pages for them.

Reeffarmers Seed Section. First Edition will consist of half of this fragment.
Under the 20,000 K the coral is more Orange Cream Reddish as shown
here. Some mauve pigments can be seen in the lower left.
