This Pink colored Montastrea sp. coral has developed into one of the most incredibly colored reef building stony corals. When we initially recieved our fragment of this coral it was colored red pink. The initial seed fragment was heavily stressed from next day shipping across the US. The coral was sent to us by Juan-Carlos Munoz from Florida who purchased the colony from a retail reef shop located in Florida. Juan-Carlos plans on selling fragments of the mother colony in the future through a web site that is currently under construction www.ReefEnvy.com We do not know which species this is and we are assuming it came from the Pacific Ocean since the coral was on display and for sale within a US retail reef shop. The corallites on this Montastrea are very large, but the corals coloration pattern, pink with green stripes, is unknown. As Reeffarmers maintained this coral within our captive reef, there were distinctive coloration changes that are demonstrated within the images below. The red pink color morphed to a changing pink to orange colored hue. Also green lines developed and radiate outward from the corallite mouths. The polyp mouth has a bright pink inner ring. The insides of the mouth are blue to pink in color. Corallites can also extend large polyps during the night time photo period. Juan-Carlos has named this coral the 'ReefEnvy Strawberry Montastrea'. This name actually fits the morph of the seed fragment we have at Reeffarmers. The green radiating lines that have developed can represent the green leafy part of a strawberry. Steve Tyree is maintaining a farmed section of this coral for reeffarmers.com in one of his 125 gallon naturally filtered Tri-Zonal Reef Aquariums. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positoned to recieve moderate to weak light under a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium Metal Halide. We have recently been adapting the coral to more moderate light levels. The Auctioned Edition opening bid for each new auction is currently $135 per small sized fragment. Each fragment will consist of an adult large corallite with 1 to 2 daughter polyps attached. Please note - We retired this coral on May 2009 due to a loss of the seed and the difficulty to get a replacement seed.
