Fire and Ice Favia YourReef seed colony. This Favia is one of the most colorful Favia corals we have
seen in captivity. It also contains a lot of blue pigments which are kinda rare in Favia corals.
Along with the blue, there are also areas with red pigments. This Favia also appears to be more then
just a Red and Blue Favia, as the pigmentation develops patterns within the corallite inner areas.
We first saw the Fire and Ice Favia at the Reef Shop Atlantis Aquarium located in the Bay Area
of California. That was during the spring/summer of 2008. This primarily blue pigmented Favia was
a very slow grower for Atlantis at that time and it was impossible to get a fragment. Reeffarmers
recently acquired a seed section of the Fire and Ice Favia from the retail shop YourReef located in
Sacramento California. John at YourReef acquired his fragments of the coral from Mingwei at
Atlantis Aquarium. John ended up exposing the Favia to moderate light and he was able to achieve
a decent growth rate. Corallite ridges of this Favia can develop a bright blue pigmentation.
The inner corallite areas are ringed with red pigments. Inside this Ring there is an inner bright
blue area. The mouths of the corallites are colored bright red. These color pigments explain the
corals name of Fire and Ice, which was coined by Mingwei. There are patterns that also develop
inside the corallite areas and the coral may develop some additional pigmentation in captivity.
Steve Tyree is maintaining a seed section of the Fire and Ice Favia for Reeffarmers.com
in a 125 gallon naturally filtered Tri-Zonal Reef Aquarium. In Steve's captive reef the coral is
positioned to receive moderate light under a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium Metal Halide. It
appears that this coral will develop its best growth and coloration under moderate lighting.
The Auctioned Edition opening bid for the first edition auction is set to start at $100.00 per
