Propagating an Elegance Coral ? Surely Reeffarmers has lost its mind. Believe it or not this Elegance Coral Catalaphyllia jardinei has been maintained within captivity since 1988 (19 years as of the spring of 2007). We have Gary and Linda Louie to thank for maintaining this captive coral for about 2 decades. What makes this situation even more incredible is that the captive reef market has not been able to import and maintain Elegance Corals for a couple of years. A disease pathogen is suspected with the current captive care problems. The Louie's Elegance Coral does not have this current problem and has even been propagated for the past few years. Reeffarmers was able to get in contact with the Louie's through Shu Tin of Monterey California. Shu Tin has grown a large Elegance colony from one of the early captive fragments that Linda Louie propagated. The coral was initially purchased by Gary Louie from the Oakland California Reef Store Lucky Goldfish . The owner Hunter Wong has also acquired an early fragment of this coral from the Louie's and he is propagating and distributing fragments. The very first 2 fragments of this coral was distributed by Linda Louie to GARF of Boise Idaho and also the Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco. Linda states that the coral prefers moderate and intermittant flow along with moderate light levels. The parent colony is currently being maintained 10 inches under a 250 watt 14K metal halide. The Louie's Elegance Coral should not be placed in any reef that also houses a recently imported Elegance Coral because the suspected disease organism causing problems for recent imports can also transfer to this captive species. As long as this is the only Elegance Coral within your reef it will expand and grow very fast. Growth rates can be enhanced by feeding the coral small pieces or fish or crustacean meat. Steve Tyree is maintaining a seed section of the Elegance Coral Catalaphyllia jardinei for Reeffarmers.com in an 80 gallon naturally filtered Bi-Zonal Fragment Growout Reef Aquarium. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positioned to receive moderate light under a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium Metal Halide. The Auctioned Edition opening bid for each new auction is currently $80 per small sized fragment with at least 2 corallite mouths. The triannual auctioned edition auction schedules can be found below. The First Edition Auctioned fragment is also imaged below.

The making of the Elegance Coral Catalaphyllia jardinei First Edition fragment. This sequence demonstrates the process
Reeffarmers utilized to make our first fragment. Upper left image shows the original seed section and the large diamond dust
blade we utilized on our dremel. Upper right image shows the two sections after the dremel cut. The skeleton was very easy
to cut through. The center left image shows how a razor blade was utilized to completely cut the tissue between these two
coral sections. The center right image shows the first edition fragment where the cut was made. The lower left image shows
the first edition fragment mounted onto a rock base. The lower right image shows the first edition fragment and the seed
section just a few hours after the fragments were separated. The corals had their tentacles extended as if nothing had happened.
